House Dems: Trump’s budget proposal could be a ‘bailout’ for white-collar workers

The House Democratic leadership said Thursday they are ready to support President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget proposal, but they caution against an immediate cut to Social Security and Medicare benefits.

In a joint statement, the Democrats said they support Trump’s plan to address the opioid crisis and “reduce the size and scope of government to allow for faster and more effective solutions to addressing the challenges of this nation.”

They also called on Trump to “reconsider the impact of his proposal” on Medicare and Social Security.

Democrats also urged Trump to support a “vigorous debate” on tax reform, the president’s tax proposal that would cut rates for middle-class families and lower the top rate from 39.6 percent to 35 percent.
